Goal is to Develop Students Who Understand That Following Jesus Means Serving Others

Posted on

One of the things we loved about this year’s BigStuf theme, Welcome to the Neighborhood, was the reminder that following Jesus means moving toward people, serving people, and seeing value in people.

That’s something we’ve tried to model for the last 21 years.

On the way to BigStuf, our charter bus pulled up and it was time to load the luggage. Before adults could step in, a group of middle and high school boys jumped in and loaded the entire bottom of the bus.

Was it perfect? Not at all.

In fact, much of it had to be unloaded and packed again.

But that’s okay.

Because discipleship isn’t just learning Bible verses, attending worship, or sitting in a small group. Discipleship is learning to serve, lead, take responsibility, work together, and put others before yourself.

Could adults have done it faster? Probably.

But our goal isn’t simply to get the job done. Our goal is to develop young men and women who understand that following Jesus means serving others.

Some of the most important lessons students learn don’t happen during a message. They happen while loading a bus, setting up chairs, cleaning a room, serving on a mission trip, or helping where they’re needed.

That’s what makes ministry so special.

We’re not just taking students on trips. We’re helping them become the kind of neighbors Jesus calls us to be.
