Serve LA - Los Angeles-Hollywood Mission Trip Story

Posted on

Yesterday I met a 33-year-old man at Serve LA. He first stopped by asking what time meals would be served, then came back around lunch and sat at a table with a group of people I had already built relationships with. As we talked about life, pets, and the weather, the conversation turned to Jesus. The moment His name was mentioned, the man immediately began to cry. Through tears he apologized and shared that he had recently been kicked out by his parents after struggling to get his alcoholism under control. He said he had only stopped by because he needed a meal and saw the sign outside, but then he said something I don’t think I’ll ever forget: “It’s been such a long time since I’ve heard the name of Jesus… let alone thought about Him. I don’t know, something about hearing His name made me cry.” When I asked him why he thought that was, after a quiet moment he simply said, “Because I need Him.” Immediately I thought of Acts 3:6: “But Peter said, ‘I don’t have any silver or gold for you. But I’ll give you what I have. In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, get up and walk!’” The man I met yesterday thought he was coming for a meal, but what he was really coming for was the hope found in the name of Jesus. - written by Lauren Strickland
